Now that Eric Schmidt will be stepping down from being the CEO of Google, what can we expect next from the company with Larry Page at the helm? According to the website, Schmidt is going to become the executive chairman for the search giant beginning in April, leaving the CEO position open for co-founder Larry Page to step in.
Schmidt has done a terrific job since he took the role as CEO in 2001, which included bringing in better results than that predicted for the fourth quarter of 2010. He guided the company through immense growth, including the Initial Public Offering (IPO) on August 19, 2004. Google Apps has taken off, with the inclusion of Postini support, Microsoft Exchange Message Continuity service, and a host of other Apps available (most of them free or with minimal fees, especially for non-profit organizations).
Quoting from Eric Schmidt, “I believe Larry is ready. His ideas are very interesting and clever and it’s time for him to have a shot running this.” This includes what some are calling “vaporware”, which basically the idea of announcing up-coming products but being vague on the details. I am sure that Page has a number of things he wants to roll out shortly after becoming CEO and showing the world that he can control the huge beast but doing it his way, rather than just following in the same footsteps that Schmidt led the company.
What do you think? Is Page up to the task or will he falter trying to lead a company that for the last 10 years has been doing nothing but upward growth? Will he do much more than Eric has done, respective to the offerings available and the profits posted in the last 10 years?
