Mark my written words, all the imagery of video games and virtual reality and living in alternate universes is actually coming true, in our lifetimes no less.
Nintendo is planning a Wii Vitality Sensor for availability in 2010. This sensor will utilize a player's pulse as a functional aspect of the games, whether a high pulse or for creating relaxing games as well, for reducing stress and lowering blood pressure by making players remain as calm as they can. Think of the ramifications of this invention to be made available to the consumer:
Exercise? Already seeing it. Wii fitness. The exercise and the pain is real, but the manner in which your visual world is presented to you while doing it is completely computer generated (programmed). Relaxation? Very Very Soon... games that will monitor and control what is real and what is fantasy, and your reaction to the stimulus. Sex? Yeah, you know its coming. (Seriously not a play on words). Work? Virtual offices? Already have them. You can pretend to have an office staff answering your phone, even if they aren't real. Walking the dog? You can do that too if you want to. See http://thesims2.ea.com/pets/index.php
What else is there? What can you do in the real world that you can't do in the virtual?
Love? There are 1 million computer nerds who will argue they have met their loves online (may be real people, may be games or just objects, computer nerds are weird like that). Family? It's going there - see Facebook "We're Related" Apps. Driving? Been done for years.
Putting a vitality sensor in video games is groundbreaking, and it is going to be an event that reshapes our world over time, as now we will begin to see human interaction being a determining factor in virtual outcomes. Think of the military and its uses of sensors for training and how soldiers will react in different environments. Think of NASA and astronauts. What about Police, Firefighters. Suicide prevention? What about Teachers, students? Having the ability to see the virtual outcome before reality will be a huge milestone. THINK OF LIFE AS A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT, THEN HAVING A DEV ENVIRONMENT TO TEST EVERYTHING ON FIRST!!
Mark my written words here people....Nintendo is reshaping the world we are living in.
