 MS Silverlight

Rumors around the inter webs are that the MS Silverlight will be going dark after the release of Silverlight 5. Version 5 is to be heading to developers soon, but after that the future does not seems so good. It seems that HTML5 will be taking the place of Silverlight for the usage on mobile devices. Adobe has recently dropped flash for the mobile devices as well.

Why do you care?

  • Well standardization across mobile devices will lead to more apps crossing the phone divide.

  • Security for said devices can also be standardized for web browsing.

  • HTML5 is supposed to be faster and better for energy consumption as well. That is a huge win for mobile devices of any type.

  • Silverlight has been a pain in some instances, having it not around would remove one more step in troubleshooting.

  • This will greatly impact Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming WP 8.

  • And if you have any programs that relay on Silverlight, you need to be on top of this. Silverlight stops….you apps might stop, which falls under "would be bad" column.

This could all be rumors, but the first posting is coming from a reliable source from a ZDNet blog. Be aware of the possibility and watch the inter webs for more information!
