IT Support | Why Install Software Patches or Upgrade Your OS?

IT Support, OS UpgradeThe world is a much different place now than it was even a few years ago.  With hackers, crackers, people that are disgruntled, kids that are bored and many other malcontents on the loose, your computer safety is at risk and constantly under attack.  Security patches plug holes that these people can use to damage and/or take control of your computer.  If you don’t keep up with Security Patches you are just begging for trouble.  Even if you only connect to the Internet to check email you are not safe without these Security Patches.  These Security Patches are made available only for Operating Systems that are currently supported by Microsoft.

Working in IT support, I know of several companies that are still using Windows XP with only SP2 or Windows 2000.  Both of these OS’s have just been retired from support.  There is even a mom and pop bookstore that is still using Windows 3.1.  Yep, you heard it here.  Windows 3.1 is still alive.  Fortunately for them it is a standalone system.  It does what they need it to do so why change?  Right?  Wrong.

Are you committed to running Windows XP with SP3 until its dying breath?  Even though support has been extended for several more years you must ask yourself how far behind the 8-ball you want to be when support does finally end.

Unless you are running a standalone computer that does not connect to the Internet you will have to upgrade your OS at some point.  The longer you wait the more of a learning curve you will have.  Being 1 OS generation behind isn’t that big of a deal.  Being 2 generations behind will certainly be a challenge.  More than that; I hope you are a quick study when the time comes.

However, you should not upgrade just for upgrades sake.  You want to make sure you are moving to a stable and user friendly OS.  Skipping Vista and going directly to Windows 7 is a good idea at this point.  Waiting a couple more years for Windows 8 (which is in the works) is too long.

If you'd like to upgrade your computer to a new operating system, call the experts at Trigon Technology today!  Contact us at 1-888-494-TRIGON or by email at solutions@TrigonIT.com.
